Daniel Malinovski, co-founder and CEO of Simplicity Group, spoke at Philippine Blockchain Week on 10 and 11 June 2025 at the SMX Convention Center in Manila.
Philippine Blockchain Week is organised by the Blockchain Council of the Philippines and ran under the theme "Decoded" in 2025, with hundreds of speakers across the week. The programme covered DeFi, GameFi, DePIN, NFTs and DAOs, with a consistent emphasis on connecting those categories to real use in healthcare, real estate, education, retail and supply chain.
Why the Philippines is a serious market for this
The Philippines is one of the few countries where crypto adoption reached ordinary users before it reached institutions. Remittance volumes, a young population and a history of play-to-earn participation produced a user base that understands wallets and on-chain transfers without needing to be persuaded that either matters.
That inverts the usual go-to-market problem. In most markets the work is explaining why a product should be on-chain at all, whereas in the Philippines the on-chain part is assumed and the question becomes whether the product is better than the version people already use. The bar is higher and the sales cycle is shorter.
What Daniel covered
Daniel's contribution focused on token design and go-to-market for teams building into the region. The recurring issue for founders was retention after incentives stop, which is the lesson the Philippines learned earlier and more expensively than most markets during the play-to-earn cycle.
The mechanism is straightforward once stated. If users are paid in a token to perform an activity, the activity is worth doing while the payment exceeds the effort, and stops the moment it does not. A design that survives contact with real users needs the product to be worth using at zero incentive, with the token doing something the product requires rather than subsidising attention.
Philippine Blockchain Week 2025 ran from 10 to 14 June at the SMX Convention Center, Manila.
